Sanfermines, Running of the Bulls

The world-renowned running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain is locally known as Sanfermines.  It is an annual celebration that would start on June 6th and end on midnight of June 14th. The festival is opened with the singing of Pobre de Mi. The running of the bulls or Encierro to the Spanish people is the most famous event.

The festival is a celebration in honor of Saint Fermin, martyred at Amiens. It was said that the saint died by being dragged or pulled by bulls through the streets of Pamplona.

The Encierro requires running, of the white clad participants with red handkerchiefs around their neck, in front of bulls on  825 meter stretch in a section of the town Pamplona.

The running of the bulls begins with the sound of two rockets. The first firecracker signal the fact that the bulls are released from their pens; and the second firecrackers made known to everyone that the last bull already left the pen. A third and fourth blast of the firecrackers announces that all of the bulls are already in the stadium and the run is finished.

The running of the bull is considered as one of Europe’s oddity. It is one of the most famous festivals in Spain that attracts hundreds of tourist. In fact, safety measure for the encierro is announced in different language for the nationalities of participants vary from Asians to North Americans.
