For starters, spring and early summer are the best times to be in the city. The weather is usually pleasant and the number of tourists is manageable, but the city is still humming and bustling with activities. High summer (mid-July to late August) is a little too challenging - many locals prefer to leave it to the guiris or foreigners. September isn't that bad, this is the time when the city recovers in its normal rhythms, the heat eases and the number of visitors drop, though the weather can be especially ruthless. If you want to see real rain pouring down on the streets of Barcelona , hang about in October. Winter isn't especially distressing, but you will certainly need a room of your own with heating.
