TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: BARCELONA SPAIN

THEATRES

Barcelona's theatre scene, though still quite amateur in its literary authority and quite a newborn in the industry of global stage performance, still makes up though for other things. For one, it achieves magnificence in its visual and audio spectacle in each of its incredible performances. The theatre scene in the city is lively and pulsating with life and is very much well attended. It can boast of having staged works by regional and even including international playwrights.

Among the most celebrated of theatrical venues in this grand city, and even the world, is the stage of Palau de la Música Catalana.

Palau de la Música Catalana.
Address: St.Francesc de Paula, 2
08003 Barcelona
Web: www.palaumusica.org
Metro stop: Urquinaona

The Palau de la Música Catalana is one of the world's leading concert halls. In Barcelona , the Palau de la Música Catalana is the venue of choice especially during musical seasons, as arranged by the different organizations, with a frequency exceeding three hundred sessions per year. Considered to be one of Modernism's architectural epitome, it was built by the renowned Catalan architect Lluís Dom i Montaner between 1905 and 1908. In 1997, it was declared a "World Heritage Site" by the UNESCO.

Since it's opening, Barcelona concert goers have had the privilege to attend concerts performed by the world s most famous artists with the likes of Leonard Bernstein conducting West Side Story , Duke Ellington performing his masterful swing music, as well as Karajan, Chick Corea , along with so many others. These musicians have given the Barcelonians a taste of what music must be like in heaven when angels sing. When you find yourself in Barcelona , don t pass out on this chance too, you might also experience such heavenly night of music too! Hark all ye heralds sing!

Beyond music and what our ears can behold, there s what the eyes can see and the heart can feel. In Barcelona , we have the Gran Teatre del Liceu built for a varied program of symphonic pieces, operas and plays.

Gran Teatre del Liceu
Address: La Rambla, 51-59
08002 Barcelona
Web: www.liceuBarcelona.com
Metro: Liceu

It opened on April 4 th , 1847, this Gran Teatre del Liceu , contrary to other opera houses, was built with private contributions instead of governmental funds.

In here, the most important works by Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, Strauss, etc. have been sung and had once a many hearts have been moved in this venue. It is proudly at the Liceu that the greatest voices of the last two centuries have rendered their magnum opus to an all too eager audience. These great voices would include Domingo, Pavarotti, Caballe, Callas, and Tebaldi who will always have a special place in the hearts of the audience. In the last 25 years, a lot of younger people have become fans of these works and regularly attend the performances at the Liceu.

However, unfortunate time has also befallen on the Liceu . As in 1861, it was set on fire for the first time and only the foyer and the horseshoe arch remained intact. The regional governments and population then at that time in general, saw that there was a need to rebuild it on the same site as soon as possible. However, on January 31 st , 1994 a fire once again engulfed the Grand Liceu theatre . It brought down into mere ashes the great architecture achievement that has witnessed the greatest performances of centuries past. However, it did not burn down the spirit of those who are avid for the beauty in the art form of theatre such that the new theatre was successfully reopened in October 1999.
