TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: CADIZ SPAIN CASTELLAR DE LA FRONTERA
HISTORY
Although the town's history dates back from the pre-historic times, as evidenced by many cave paintings from the Bronze age, Castellar de la Frontera's saga became more exciting during medieval times. During this era, the entire site was a defense fortress that played a very important role in the wars between the Christians and the Muslims. Its very strategic location became reason for the many attempts of conquest by different cultures over the centuries.
Castellar de la Frontera was alternately under the rule of Castillan conqueror Fernando III, then the Moors, then Juan de Saavedra in the 1400's. Several other battles for territory happened until 1650 when the town became the possession of the Countess of Castellar, Teresa Maria Arias de Saavedra. Later it came under the power of the Medinaceli family until the Rumasa group acquired the town in the 1970's.
