TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: CADIZ SPAIN LOS BARRIOS
Los Barrios has three rivers that run thru its borders. These are the rivers Palmones, Cañas and Guadarranque. The Ruta del Toro or Route of the Bull actually starts here where two major nature reserves hold an area of responsibility: the Marismas del Rio Palmones and the Parque Natural de los Alcornocales. Aside from bull farms, cork trees, eucalyptus and olive trees surround this very fertile land. Today the town's economy is based on the utilization of this vast richness, particularly in agriculture, cattle and forest resources.
The village of Los Barrios, as it is seen today, came into being during the early 18th century, particularly in 1704 when the former inhabitants of Gibraltar were driven out by the English who occupied the land. This group came to settle around the area of the Chapel of San Isidro, which eventually became a town center leading to its declaration as an independent municipality in 1756. Centuries before, Los Barrios, just like many of its neighbors, also endured Muslim & Christian territorial wars. The prolonged Muslim occupation ran from the 7th to the 14th century, and afterwards it was under Christian rule being in the control of the Duke of Medina Sidonia. Later it was relinquished to the Spanish crown in 1502.
