TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: CADIZ SPAIN VILLALUENGA DEL ROSARIO

Travel Guides Directory: Villaluenga del Rosario Cádiz Spain Villaluenga Del Rosario is the highest village in the province of Cádiz in the Andalucian region of Spain. The town of Villaluenga Del Rosario is located approximately 800 meters above sea level and current estimated population is only 500.

Villaluenga Del Rosario traces its origins back to the Neolithic period. The La Manga caves found in the region contain remains dating back to this period.

The current village was built in the 7th to 8th century A.D., by Muslim occupants. In 1485, the Spanish Rodrigo Ponce de León conquered the region and displaced the Moors.

In the 18th century, Villaluenga Del Rosario was given the title of "Noble Village" and its present name for its dedication to the Virgin of the Rosary. Then, at the beginning of the 19th century, a cholera epidemic and the subsequent destruction of the village by the French brought the end of an era of prosperity for Villaluenga.

Today however, Villaluenga has risen from its ashes, with its people focusing on agriculture, livestock breeding, and forestry. Recently, tourism has exposed the town to a greater global audience.
