TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: CADIZ SPAIN VILLAMARTIN
PLACES OF INTEREST
Villamartín has a rich history, evident in the many historical sites and remains in the town. First among these is the Parish of Holy Mary of the Virtues. This is the oldest building in the town, and it is estimated that the church was constructed at around the same time the town we know now as Villamartín was officially founded. The church features architecture mainly from the Renaissance period.
The Church of Las Angustias is another old church in Villamartín. This is located right in the center of the city, in the town hall square. The church dates back to the 17th century and is largely baroque in architecture.
The Town Hall Square has been the heart of the town ever since it was founded. After the 1970s, the town hall was restored to a more modern aspect, and recently, it was reverted to its original structure and design.
The nearby Torrevieja Archaeological Park is the site of many historical digs from at least 5,000 years ago. This is such a rich historical location because of its excellent location among fertile fields and as a central point of travel.
Perhaps the most important historical site in Villamartín, the Matrera Castle is located on top of Pajarete Hill. This was the fortress built at the end of the ninth century to defend the nearby area. The castle is divided in two parts: a great parade ground surrounded by walls and whose entryways are two doors, and a tower. The parade ground was used as a shelter during sieges. The tower is located on the north side of the castle, a well-protected position.
