TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: CORDOBA SPAIN

TOWNS AND CITIES

Travel Guides Directory: Córdoba Spain The City of Cordoba is the capital city of the Province. This place was originally inhabited by the Romans, however, it became more famous as a hub for the Moors. Cordoba happened to be the western capital of the Islamic empire during the tenth century. Up to this day, the Moorish occupancy remains evident with the Moorish structures that still exist in the city. One of the ancient impressive Moorish structures is the Great Mosque or Mezquita which happens to be one of the largest places of worship for the Islam worldwide. The construction of the Great Mosque of Cordoba began between 784 A.D. and 786 A.D., during the reign of Abd al-Rahman I who ran away from Syria to the Iberian Peninsula after his family was massacred by a rival political dynasty.

During the 13 th century, the Christians triumphed in the city, but the rulers chose not to destroy the Great Mosque due to its undeniable magnificence. Instead, the new Christian rulers built a Cathedral in the center of its archways and columns, giving birth to the intriguing yet glorious church-mosque setting that can still be witnessed today.

Priego de Cordoba

Priego de Cordoba is said to be one of the loveliest towns of the province. This flourishing town is well-known for its olive-farming industry and baroque places of worship. This town also possesses stunning vistas in the gently sloping hills of the Subb Mountain Range .

Barrio de la Villa is Priego de Cordoba´s oldest residential area. Right here you will witness typical Spanish whitewashed abodes whose walls are ornamented with plant pots of colorful geraniums and petunias. The doors and windows are neatly painted in bright blue or green. The houses are put at odds by a maze of very narrow, cobble-stoned pathways.

Aguilar de la Frontera

Aguilar de la Frontera is a small and very pretty town and is inhabited by more or less 13,000 inhabitants. It can be easily bypassed if one is traveling on the main road N331, which links Cordoba to Antequera . The charming town of Aguilar de la Frontera is to be found in the middle of the Montilla-Moriles wine growing region. Aguilar de la Frontera is certainly worth taking a detour for the marvelous sights and natural wonders that it has to offer. Of p articular note are the town s interesting history and architecture. In the area, visitors will be delighted to see a monastery church with ostentatious baroque design and the renaissance parish church of Santa Maria del Soterrano .

You must also not miss the center of the town, where a striking and unusual eight-sided plaza is found, flanked by several impressive historic buildings. For the best views in town, head for the Pe de Moro which is the site of the old castle. The site offers wonderful panoramic views over the town and the surrounding countryside.

The Plaza San Jose , which was built in 1813, is a nonconforming concourse shaped like an octagon and bordered by bodacious ancient edifices. Another point of interest is the 17 th century Descalzas Convent with its baroque architecture and superb paintings and plasterwork, a baroque style clock tower, impressive mansion houses and some fascinating castle ruins.

Iznajar

In the ancient times, Iznajar was a prehistoric Iberian settlement. However, the village prospered in the eighth century when Arab settlers built a fortress on the peninsula and called it 'Hins Ashar.' Thus the place now has a modern Spanish name of Iznahar.

Iznajar is to be found in close proximity to the southern boundary of the C province. It also serves as a natural access to the Sierra Subeticas Natural Park. In the recent years, this little village has also metamorphosed into an important area, due to the construction of the reservoir. Also a stunning sight for the visitors to see in this town is the ruins of the 1,200 year old castle.
