Carboneras is Spanish for coal bunkers. This is a portal to the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, with its once lush forests that surround the city denuded in order to feed the furnaces as well as strip the mountains of their coal. It is now a barren wasteland contrasting beautifully with deep blue of Mediterranean Sea. When the coal industry eventually faded out, the town turned to fishing. Just more recently, the town established itself as an industrial center producing energy and cement. It has now dabbled into tourism as well.

The beauty of Carboneras lies in its beaches, which claims almost 17 km of fine sand along the coast. The most central beach is El Ancón, an annual recipient of the prestigious Blue EEC flag award. Las Marinicas, near the port area, however is known as the widest beach. El Algarrobico, down the road leading towards Mojácar, is the largest beach, at nearly 3 km. Los Muertos is a nudist beach. The sanctuary can only be reached by boat. The latter two form part of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park.
