TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: COSTA ALMERIA SPAIN VERA
One of the most important commercial centers in the region, Vera is essentially a walled, town of renaissance affectations and architecture.
Formerly called by the name Baria, Vera was situated by sea near Villaricos. Upon Moorish conquest, the colonizers mobilized a move to the hill of Espiritu Santo. But in 1815, an earthquake rattled the settlement, destroying it completely. It is popular legend that Queen Isabel herself climbed to peak of the Espiritu Santo hill. She fired an arrow and ordered that Vera be built where it landed. On that premise, Vera was supposedly then built on its present location in the 16th century. The town is fashioned in the urban Renaissance style and later expanded tremendously in 18th century.
