Elche is a city with a very affluent culture and complex history. Situated near the Mediterranean Sea, Elx (in Catalan) or Elche (in Spanish) officially has these two names. The city is located in the comarca of Baix Vinalopó, in the Land of Valencia, Spain. The city is the capital of the region of Bajo Vinalopó (El Baix Vinalopò). It ranks as the third of the most populous cities in the province of Alicante with 207,163 inhabitants, according to the 2003 census. The city approximately has an area of 326.1 km2 with a population density of 635.27 inhabitants per km2. The city lies on the banks of the wide Vinalopo river which cuts through the city.
Elche's economy basically subsists on tourism. However, aside from tourism, its primary industry is that of shoes. Over 1000 shoe factories dot Elx, raising it to the ranks of the most important areas in Spain and the rest of Europe for the shoe industry. Aside from its subsistence on the footwear industry, the economy of Elx is also based, in parts, on the other economic activities like agriculture (dates, olives, cereals and pomegranates), although it has lost importance in the last years; rubber industry; trade, which employs 20% of the workforce. The city regularly also produces wooden furniture, cognac, wine and olive oil.
The Ciutat d'Elx in Elche is its very own conference center. There is also an international airport (Aeroport de L' Altet) as well and a University (Universidad Miguel Hernandez).
