TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: COSTA BLANCA SPAIN: TORREVIEJA

MUSEUMS

Travel Guides Directory: Costa Blanca Spain Torrevieja Museum of Sea And Salt

10 Calle Patricio Perez, Torrevieja Telephone 96-670-68-38.

Opening hours: From Monday to Friday, mornings from 09:30am to 2:30p, and evenings from 5:00 to 9:00pm. Saturdays from 10:00am to 1:00p, and 5:00 to 9:00pm. Sundays from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Closed on Monday afternoon.

Inaugurated in its present provisional headquarters in February 1995, the Museum of Sea and Salt exhibits a selection of things that reflect Torrevieja's historic roots. There s a display of handicrafts made of salt, archaeological material, a collection of photographs of the time, model boats, articles for fishing and navigation, among others. Recently there has been the exhibition of an outstanding model and diorama of the Torrevieja sailing ship " Pascual Flores".

The said ship is in fact the last of Torrevieja's ancient coastal shipping fleet and is now being restored at the salt quay after being bought by Torrevieja town hall in the United Kingdom.

Without a doubt, one of the chief attractions of this museum is the Delfin S-61 submarine . It was given by the Spanish Ministry of Defense to the town of Torrevieja . The vessel and all its internal sections can be visited in the fishing port area. The submarine is the only exhibit of its type in Spain and has been viewed by Spanish and international visitors alike. It truly symbolizes a milestone in the history of the Torrevieja Sea and Salt Museum .

Tomas Valcarcel Museum of Easter

Calle Formentera, Torrevieja

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, mornings from 10:00am to 1:00pm and evenings from 4:00 to 7:00pm.

Established in 1992, the Tomas Valcarcel Museum of Easter is run by the central committee of the Holy Week brotherhoods. It is named after one of Torrevieja´s most multi-faceted artists, Tomás Valcárcel Deza , who donated to the museum a small-scale replica statue of the town s patron saint la Purisima Concepcion ( Antonio Castillo Lastrucci , 1947).Throughout the year except during Holy Week, one can witness and marvel at all the heritage of the Passion processions -- thrones, statues, standards with artisan embroidery, displays of sculptures, paintings and other objects. There s also another model of the patron saint which was for many years with the Brotherhood of Absent Torrevejenses in Barcelona ( Hnos Blanco López , 1957). Please note that the museum is closed to the public for the weeks prior to the Easter celebration.

Habaneras Museum / Ricardo Lafuente Museum

Plaza de la Estación, Torrevieja

Opening hours: Monday to Friday, mornings 10:15am to 1:15pm, and evenings at 4:30 to 7:30pm.

Ricardo Lafuente Aguado is Torrevieja's most prolific writer of Habaneras song. Hundreds of compositions testify to his art and creative talent. His habanera " Torrevieja " has been sung all over the world in many versions and he is also the author of the Torrevieja anthem.

This museum is a tribute to his work and his persona. The museum displays many objects related to the writer -- recordings, paintings, photographs and general personal souvenirs of Lafuente and the group he leads, the ' Salinas de Torrevieja ' Choir and Orchestra. Such interesting things can be seen in this small but often packed museum that has the Torrevieja Habanera as the common denominator. Ricardo Lafuente is a world authority on the Torrevieja Habaneras and he himself goes to the museum.
