TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: COSTA DEL SOL SPAIN MÁLAGA
TRANSPORTATION
A fabulous vacation at Málaga and the Costa del Sol is a mere flight booking away! The Picasso International Airport in Málaga is an international destination for a multitude of airlines, and hundreds of flights come in daily from various points of origin around the globe. It brings little surprise that the Picasso International Airport is one of Spain's busiest airports.
From the airport, visitors can travel to any adjacent destination, including, of course, Málaga city itself, which is 8 kilometers away. One can get to Málaga city by one of four ways: train, bus, airport taxi, and hired car.
To take the train, visitors should exit the departure hall (with their luggage, of course) and walk towards the main road away from the airport, traversing a footbridge. The station is on the other side of the bridge and the walk takes approximately five minutes.
The first train to leave for Málaga city leaves at 7:01. Succeeding trains leave every 15 and 45 minutes after the hour. The last train leaves at 23:45. Best thing is, the trip is a mere 12 minutes.
Visitors are advised to procure train tickets at the airport or the station before boarding. Visitors should also be aware that the train is incredibly efficient and practically always on schedule. Visitors will be refunded their train fare if the trains experience delays of up to 5 minutes.
Alternatively, visitors can take the airport taxi from the airport to Málaga city. It should be noted that taxis will only carry a maximum of 4 passengers, including children. If there are more than 4 passengers, the train offers unlimited passenger accommodation.
To get to the taxi stand, travelers should exit from the arrival hall, through the exit at the right. The taxi queue is right outside the exit; one will not miss it. In peak times, the queues can be somewhat long. Taxi fares are not metered, but are predetermined according to the exact destination. Taxi drivers can provide passengers with a list of fare rates. It is important to establish the fare rate before boarding the taxi.
Another way to travel to Málaga city is by bus. This is an even cheaper way to get around, and when going to Málaga city, will not require any transfers at all. Unlike the train, bus schedules are not always on time, so visitors rushing to catch a plane are best advised to take a taxi or train instead.
To get to the bus terminal, exit the arrival hall at the right side. Outside, the bus stop is about 50 meters away, to the right from the exit. It's hard to miss. Bus 19 is the bus bound for the Málaga city terminal. It leaves at 7:00, and every 30 minutes thereafter. The last bus is at 24:00.
From Málaga city to the airport, bus 19 is the bus to take. It leaves at 6:30 and ever 30 minutes thereafter. Last bus to the airport from Málaga city is at 23:30. The bus fare costs less than 5 Euro - very cheap.
The more adventurous can opt to hire a car right at the Málaga airport and drive themselves around! There are hundreds of companies providing car rentals in and around the Málaga area. Visitors can access information on these car rental companies at the information booth at the airport, for price comparisons and such. Renting a car can be cheaper than other forms of transportation in the long run, and can be a lot of fun provided that one be careful.
