TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: COSTA DE LA LUZ SPAIN BARBATE

PARKS

Travel Guides Directory: Costa de la Luz Spain Barbate To the north of the town you can find a vast Protected Area rich with pine forest that reaches down to around 100m high cliffs. There are also miles of long sandy beaches flanked by these pines. This is the Breña y Marismas de Barbate park which was created in 1989 and is Andalucia's second largest coastal reserve. Along with it is one of the most spectacular rocky cliffs along the Andalucian Atlantic coastline with a privileged stunning view over the sea and the rocky Cape Trafalgar with its lighthouse. Although the park is the smallest out of the 22 natural parks in the Andalucia , it still contains a variety of habitats like the pine forest, wetland, sea cliffs, mobile dunes and a marine section, with 940ha. All in all, this occupies around a fifth of the protected area of 4,863 of the region.

There is also the Pinar de la Breña which is a densely packed wooded area from the cliffs inland down between the Barbate and Caños de Meca . Apart from fishing in here, another one of the park's main natural resources are the collected pine nuts from the Pinar de la Breña . The park also has a wetland area around 2,500ha. The Marismas de Barbate , was added to the park later in 1994 which attracts numerous migrating birds, waders and gulls. The pine woodland is accessible through the CA2143 which links Caños de Meca to Barbate .
