Right on the east of the beach Matalascañas , there is a spectacular stretch of virgin beach that runs along the park of Parque Nacional de Donaña . This part of the town however is accessible only by foot, coming from the eastern corner of the town. Further on the way from the coast of Mazagón to Matalascañas you can witness some amazing fossilized dunes. Because they are public, you can readily explore them on foot along the Parque Dunar or even around the Cuesta de Maneli . Actually, the beach and dunes located at the Cuesta de Maneli are a beautiful and serene part of the coast which is accessible by the route A494 on your way to Mazagón . Moving on the west of Matalascañas you can arrive at the huge and newly protected area of sand dunes which are called Parque Dunar . This large area of sand dunes located in Doñana is constantly under change because of the influence of the great winds of the area along with the sea. Aside from the movable dunes there are also fixed or stable dunes in the area. This type of dunes covers around 14,000 hectares of area within the Park. They also offer a wide range of old dunes which form from huge parabolic dunes to quaint dunes that are shaped like a hairpin. Quite interestingly there are also those that are sand bars which aligned themselves with prevailing south-western winds along with small active fronts developed which create migrating tongues and corridors.
