TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: FUERTEVENTURA SPAIN: TUINEJE

Travel Guides Directory: Fuerteventura Spain Tuineje The municipality of Tuineje consists of several towns that include Gran Tarajal, Tequital, Las Playitas, Juan Gopar, Tiscamanita, Tesejerague, Giniginamar, Tarajelejo and Tuineje .

The municipality of Tuineje preserves the authentic Fuerteventura . Among the several municipalities in the island, Tuineje has the more genuine Spanish feel. Although the largest town in this municipality is Gran Tarajal , the city hall is located at Tuineje town. This municipality has the most well preserved zone in Fuerteventura . Its coastlines are surrounded by cliffs that are separated by mouths of large valleys. The Gran Tarajal is a commercial area that retains its authentic beauty. It includes a spectacular black-sanded beach, which is surrounded by an array of shops, bars and restaurants. The lighthouse in El Faro de la Entallada , which is near Las Playitas , was built in the early 20th century. This lighthouse is open to the public for a hair-raising experience to its top. The town of Tiscamanita is a historical place. Included on its list of attractions is the windmill information center, Saint Michael Parish Church and Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel . The town of Tuineje is the capital of the district with the same name. It is located in the southeastern part of the Fuerteventura Island .

This quiet, small town has a very interesting history. In 1740, roughly forty brave farmers armed themselves with five muskets to battle against 50 English pirates, which were armed with guns and cannons.

The battle took place at the Montaña de Tamacite . Surprisingly, the natives of Tuineje , even with their lack of weapons, won this memorable battle. During this day, thirty of the Englishmen and five locals of Fuerteventura, known as the Majoreros, were killed. The cannons used by the pirates are still preserved in the Betancuria Museum until this day. For many years, the town of Tuineje was known as an agricultural area because it lies in the heart of a wide-ranging productive plain.

Although the town of Gran Tarajal developed much later, it has become more important than Tuineje because of its economic stance.

Nevertheless, the district of Gran Tarajal still bows down to the Tuineje administration.
