In 1590, Felipe III charged the Italian, Leonardo Torriani with the task of constructing edifices in order to protect the island from the assault of pirates. Thus, he created El Puente de Las Bolas and El Castillo de San Gabriel . Previously there stood a fort at this very site, but it was burned by a pirate named Arraez Amurat, before he attacked the island. Then, in 1972, it was restored and transformed into what it is today, El Museo Arqueologico y Etnografico . (Visiting hours: Monday to Friday 8am to 3pm. Telephone: 928 811 950).
