TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: LANZAROTE SPAIN: HARIA
Although the pre-Spanish origins of the name of Haria have remained a mystery, it is said that its name comes from a phonetic deterioration of the term 'faria,' which was used during the times of conquest.
Also called 'the village of one thousand palm trees', Haria is the capital of the municipality and is typified by its stunning landscapes and crystal clear waters found at Orzola.
The municipality of Haria suffered various attacks from outside and from pirate invasions as well. The most devastating occurred in 1586, in which all the palm trees were burned. Surprisingly and with much gratitude, the trees grew back, and hence today it is still acknowledged as the village of a thousand palm trees.
Situated in the northeast of the island, the following villages depend upon it: Arrieta, Guinate, Tabayesco, Ye, Maguez, Charco del Palo, Punta Mujeres and Mal a.
The traditional festivals worth a visit are San Juan (24th June with the burning of the bonfires), San Pedro , El Cristo de la Sed , the popular carnivals , and the festival of El Pino .
