La Laguna is rich in history and culture. Though it is no longer the politlcal capital of Tenerife , La Laguna is still widely held to be the cultural and religious capital, boasting outstanding architectural monuments and 17 th and 18 th century buildings.
Churches
Among the most important structures in La Laguna are the churches, the most famous of which is the Iglesia de la Concepcion. This was built in 1502; the first ever church in Tenerife . The Iglesia de Santo Domingo was built in the 17 th century and contains excellent paintings by Cristobala Hernandeza de Quintana. The Iglesia de San Miguel de las Victorias, built in 1507, features wooden Gothic sculptures.
Casa del Corregidor
This is one of the oldest buildings in the city. It served as the town hall when La Laguna was the capital of Tenerife .
Casa de la Alhóndiga
This building was constructed in the early 17 th century. It served to house the administrative officials of the town and serve as an economic planning center.
Monasterio de San Juan Bautista
The Monastery of St John the Baptist was founded by the Franciscan order of the Clarisas in 1577. After burning down in a fire, it was rebuilt in the 18 th century.
Iglesia de San Sebastian
This church was originally built in the 16 th century and rebuilt in the 19 th century. It had passed from one religious order to another throughout its history.
Palacio de Lercaro
This palace served as the house of Gaspar Justiniani, a noted lawyer. His descendant, Catherine Justiniani, lived in the house in 1593 together with Francisco Lercaro of Leon, the then-general lieutenant of Tenerife , a union of two families of Italian origin. The present-day palace was erected by the end of the 16 th century. Today, it houses the Museum of History of Tenerife .
Casa Salazar
Construction work on this building began in the middle of 17 th century. This is a fine example of Baroque architecture combined with the Neoclassical.
Palacio de Nava
The Palacio de Nava is is one of the more unusual and interesting structures in Tenerife . Its architecture combines influences of Baroque, Neoclassical, and Manierista. This is a very important cultural building.
Casa de Alvarado - Bracamonte o de los Capitanes Generales
This stately edifice was built by Diego Alvarado - Bracamonte, who served as Tenerife 's commander in chief from 1624 to 1631.
Antiguo Colegio de las Dominicas
This building once housed the school of the Dominican mothers. The building is a fine example of gothic architecture. Today it houses the city council.
Casa de Anchieta
The House of Anchieta once belonged to the captain and notary public of Tenerife , Juan de Anchieta, in the 16 th century. The same building is said to have been the home of Father Jose de Anchieta, the Apostle of Brazil and the founder of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In later years, the famous poet Manuel lived in this house.
Ermita de San Miguel
This hermitage was built by Fernandez de Lugo as a special tribute to St. Michael. The structure was erected in 1506.
Monasterio de Santa Catalina de Siena
This church serves as the home of the Dominican nuns. It was built in the 17 th century.
